Palatine Gallery and Royal Apartments

The Palatine Gallery and the Royal Apartments occupy the whole first floor (“noble floor”) of the Pitti Palace, former residence of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany – first of the Medici dynasty and later of the Habsburg-Lorraine one – and eventually royal palace of the Kings of Italy from 1860 to 1919.

The magnificent Palatine Gallery was created in the left wing of the Palace by Leopold II Habsburg-Lorraine between the end of the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th century. A selection of almost 500 artworks coming from the Medicean collections was permanently arranged in the ceremonial rooms, including the largest amount of paintings in the world by Raphael, as well as numerous works by great European masters from the Renaissance to the Baroque, like  Botticelli, Filippo Lippi, Titian, Van Dyck, Caravaggio and Rubens.

The Royal Apartments are made up of the fourteen magnificent rooms in the right wing of the Palace and were inhabited by the Grand Dukes of the Medici and Habsburg-Lorraine families, and lastly by the Royal House of Savoy (hence their name) when Florence was Capital of Italy. They are sumptuously arranged with furniture collected by the three dynasties and therefore dated from the 16th century to the 19th century: tables with semi-precious stone inlay, silk tapestries, exquisite objects and furnishings – all in a striking combination of styles which shows the daily life and typical taste of the different periods and inhabitants.

Modern Art Gallery

Housed on the second floor of the Pitti Palace, the Modern Art Gallery displays a copious selection of paintings and sculptures dated from the beginning of the 19th century to the first three decades of the 20th century. It exhibits Neoclassical statues by Canova, history paintings by Hayez and Ciseri, the prominent collection of works by Tuscan Macchiaioli painters (Fattori, Lega and Signorini), as well as paintings by notable artists of Symbolism and Divisionism and Italian leading figures of the 1930s.

Treasury of the Grand Dukes

The Treasury of the Grand Dukes (formerly known as Silver Museum) is located on the ground and mezzanine floors of the Pitti Palace, formerly inhabited by the Medici family during summer. It hosts the precious “Medicean Treasure”: semi-precious stone vases, rock crystals, ambers and ivories. The silverware comes from the so-called “Salzburg Treasure”, namely the collections belonging to the Bishops of Salzburg and brought to Florence by Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Habsburg-Lorraine. The museum also preserves a remarkable collection of jewels made between the 17th and 20th centuries along with a considerable section focused on contemporary jewels.

Costume and Fashion Museum

The Costume and Fashion Museum (formerly known as Costume Gallery) is housed in the small building called “Palazzina della Meridiana” adjoining the southern wing of the Pitti Palace. It is the first Italian State museum of fashion history, whose collections include garments and accessories since the 18th century up nowadays, being constantly increased thanks to the State acquisitions of private and institutional donations. The collection also includes famous costumes worn by the actors of important movies and theatrical works as well as an extremely rare exhibition of 16th century garments worn by Grand Duke Cosimo I de'Medici, his wife Eleanor of Toledo and their young son Garcia. In addition to the main exhibition of works selected from deposits (totally replaced every three years), there is a smaller section dedicated to events lasting for short periods.
